All the Mathews High School Music Department students’ hard work paid off this weekend, with great competitive performances from all of the school’s ensembles. The Concert Band, Choir, String Orchestra, and Percussion Ensemble performed Friday night in Newport News before a panel of judges in competition. The band received a Superior Rating and finished second in its class. The choir received an Excellent Rating and took first place in its class. The orchestra received an Excellent Rating and finished first in its class and was rated Best Orchestra Overall. The percussion ensemble received a Superior Rating and finished first in its class. Individual accolades included an Outstanding Student Accompanist award for Cora Rowe and an Outstanding Vocal Soloist award for Aiden Sowers.
