The men’s varsity four and men’s double were among the winners for Mathews High School in Saturday’s home regatta at Williams Wharf.
The regatta, the second home race of the year for MHS, also featured crews from Great Bridge, Gloucester, West Potomac, River City (Richmond) and Christchurch.
In the first race, the men’s varsity four of Zach Payne, Cole Johnson, Phillip Machen, Andrew Merz and coxswain Lance South pulled the fastest time (5:09.3) of both varsity four races, beating GHS, Great Bridge and River City in their heat.
Later Merz and Payne won their heat in the two double races, again with the fastest time, and in the afternoon each won single races with Merz capturing the fastest time. Johnson and Machen took second in their double heat behind CCS and then combined with Merz and Payne to win the men’s quad ahead of Great Bridge and GHS who finished second and third, respectively.
