Mathews High School rowers captured first-, second- and third-place finishes at Saturday’s Al Urquia Regatta at Sandy Run Regional Park, Occoquan.
The first scheduled event found the MHS women’s novice four of Jamie Robins, Alexa Daniels, Brittany Mitchem, Logan Howlett and coxswain Trevor Thomas in a qualifier but the girls had a bad race and were eliminated from further competition.
The bad streak continued when Adrian Phillips, Gus Bauby, Matt Oliver, Tucker Blackwell and cox Thomas took another fifth in the men’s second four final. In his first race in the men’s single event, Bill Riley took third and was making good progress in the final sprint against second-place Western Albemarle.
Things brightened up as Madisson Haynes, Ashley Payne, Howlett and Taylor Williams pulled out a second-place finish in the women’s senior quad behind Woodbridge and ahead of Hylton A, J.E.B. Stuart, Western Albemarle and Hylton B, respectively. The team’s hi...
