The Mathews High School jayvee girls’ basketball team improved its record to 10-0 with victories over York and West Point high schools during the week.
The Lady Devils faced the AA squad from York on Friday. The teams have played three close games in the past few years, with York winning each time. This time Mathews came out on top, 52-46. Mathews jumped out to an early 12-1 lead, York reeled off 20 straight points, and the Devils closed the gap to 30-25 at the half.
Mathews went to a full-court press in the third quarter to draw even at 40 after three quarters. The Devils continued to dominate the boards and Kai McCann’s six fourth-quarter points helped lift Mathews over the Falcons.
Taylor South led the charge for the Lady Blue Devils with 14 points, followed by Shanice Williams and Savanna Wooten with nine each. McCann added eight points, Veronica Crosby had six and Carole Bell, Mariah Robinson and Hunter Thomas chipped in two each.
