The Mathews High School boys’ and girls’ cross country teams won their last home meet of the season last Wednesday, Oct. 23, at Beaverdam Park with team scores of 17 and 15, respectively.
Senior cross country runners Lorena Carballo, Baylee Bell, Colin Moore, Jaxon McDonald, Seth James and Gavin Dustin were celebrated before the meet started. Each senior runner chose a teacher or coach that impacted their lives to honor during senior celebrations. They were track coach Tony Forrest, soccer coach Mike Congrove, history teacher Tony Carlson, math teacher Philip Sanderson, school nurse Patricia Lewis and math teacher Delores Bloomfield.
Dustin placed first during the boys’ race with a finishing time of 17:16, followed by Blake Hunley in second with a time of 17:31 and James in third with a time of 17:39.
