After a two-year delay due to COVID-19, the Mathews High School Hall of Fame Class of 2020 was finally able to be inducted in a ceremony held at the school on Friday night. They joined the 33 athletes, coaches and contributors who were honored in May 2019 in the Hall of Fame’s inaugural class. Among those honored at the ceremony were, from left, Chuck Sutton, Dino Papas, Gene Sutton, Jimmy Sopko, Janice Vogel, Mike Fry (son of the late Melvin “Pete” Fry), Phyllis Callis Hudgins, Betsy Hudgins Ripley, Melissa Hudgins Diggs, Jason Smith, Beverly Hudgins, David Shuber, Jeremy Elliott and Rachel Close Darnell. Missing 2020 HOF members were Matt Lawson, Lynne Forrest Martin, Bobby Riedel, Erich Nitzsche, Jerry Davis, Chris Shepherd, Katie Lakin Schultz and Drs. Hugh Bryan III and Sterling N.
