Three weeks into the season, the Mathews High School golf team’s record stands at 1-3, coach Wayne Lewis said last week.
The team consists of seven returning players from last season—Colton Barrick, Thomas Hubbard, Ethan Long, Henry Hospodar, Conner Beattie, Soles Small and Libby Hospodar.
“We got off to a slow start, losing our first match to Middlesex,” Lewis said. “In the next match, we got our only win so far against West Point. Although we lost our next match against King William and Rappahannock, our team score improved greatly.”
In the team’s Aug. 18 match at the Golden Eagle Golf Club in Irvington, the Devils lost to Lancaster but the MHS team score was its best so far by 16 shots. “Although we are 1-3, each match has shown improvement,” Lewis said.
