The Mathews High School golf team kicked off the season Monday with a match against Northumberland at the Indian Creek Country Club in Kilmarnock. Mathews fell to the host Indians, shooting 221 as a team to 173 for Northumberland, according to MHS coach Jake Johnson. Johnson’s top scorer was Chase Ambrose with a 46. Northumberland’s Tre Booth was their team’s top scorer, shooting a 36. In addition to Ambrose, other top scorers for Mathews were Adam Dustin, Hayden Marshall, Bryce West, Jackson Rowe and Miles Hugate. Mathews was scheduled to face Lancaster on Wednesday at the Golden Eagle Golf Club in Irvington. While the Mathews golfers are young and inexperienced, “they’ve all shown signs of improvement in the short time we’ve practiced,” Johnson said.
