The Mathews High School girls’ basketball team got on a hot streak this week, winning three games in a row, including two against Tidewater District foes.
The Lady Devils traveled to Middlesex last Thursday, beating the Chargers, 42-35, after trailing at the half, 10-17. In the second half, Mathews started to attack the basket more instead of shooting jump shots and getting the Chargers in foul trouble. Of the 37 foul shots taken by Mathews, 30 attempts were in the second half, including 18 in the final quarter. Mathews took a two-point deficit into the fourth quarter, but outscored Middlesex, 21-12, in the final period to take the win.
Mackenzie Moughon and Shanice Williams led Mathews with eight and seven points respectively, followed by Shelby Ware with six points while Savanna Wooten and Taylor Denton added five points each. Lexus Walton contributed four points, Taylor South added three, and Whitney Eriksen and Hannah Rowe chipped in two points each.
