MHS girls’ tennis begins season

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team got underway last week with away matches starting with last year’s state champion Rappahannock and followed by a match at Warhill High School.
While Mathews extended the play of many of the games they fell to both opponents, 8-0 and 8-1 with sophomores Ella Ward and Jayda Thomas coming away with a doubles win against Warhill.
On Monday, the Blue Devils traveled to Northampton where they lost, 5-4. Liberti Carter, Ward and Thomas won their singles matches, while the #2 doubles team of Carter and Ward were also victorious.
The MHS girls were scheduled to host West Point on Wednesday.
The team is led by co-captains Lily Jarosz (senior) and Carter (junior). Other members include senior Brooklyne Fulford, sophomores Lyla Duff, Rayann Helbig, Ward and Thomas, and eighth graders Delaney Boatman and Charlotte Bailey. The team is assisted by volunteer coaches Lauren Hurst, Jim Nolan and Faith Lewis.
