MHS girls split pair; miss playoff bid

In its final week of play, the Mathews High School volleyball team defeated King and Queen in front of a home crowd during last Thursday’s Senior Night contest, but fell on the road to Lancaster on Monday.
With the loss to Lancaster, Mathews ended with a 9-11 season record, just missing out on post-season play. “This team is better than their record indicates,” said head coach Pat Moughon. “They are a hard-working bunch of girls with a never-say-die attitude. I’m sorry we didn’t get a chance to upset a team or two in the playoffs.”
“This season consisted of growth for our program,” added assistant coach Sarah Brown. “We had two full rosters this year and we are looking to continue improving next season. I am so proud of the leaps and bounds each student-athlete has made this year, and I cannot wait to have the girls back on the court next year.
