The Mathews High School varsity softball team picked up a 6-0 shutout victory over the visiting West Point Pointers last Thursday. Unfortunately, the MHS girls dropped the next two—falling to Rappahannock on Monday, 11-1, and losing an 11-10 heartbreaker Tuesday to Middlesex.
The Lady Devils were firing on all cylinders last Thursday, with Morgan Crittenden earning a complete game shutout with nine strikeouts. Crittenden also helped out her own cause with a single. Others getting hits included Aly Jackson, who ended the night with three doubles and an RBI; Avery Thomas (two singles and an RBI); Angel Shultz (triple, two RBIs); Ashton Hudgins (double, RBI), and Lindsay Coons (single).
Rappahannock scored eight runs in the bottom of the second inning to overpower the Devils, 11-1. Mathews did have a couple offensive standouts—Jackson hit a big blast that went over the left field fence for a home run, and Chelsea Armistead hit a double that bounced off the left field fence.
