The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team won in dramatic fashion last Thursday night against the visiting Lancaster Red Devils. The game took all five sets to determine the winner.
The host Blue Devils got off to a slow start, falling in the first two sets by scores of 25-9 and 25-15, and Mathews appeared poised to lose in a three-game sweep.
The second set, however, seemed to impart a new energy to the Blue Devils, and they came roaring back. In the third do-or-die game, Mathews rallied to post a 25-22 win. With the crowd behind them, the Blue Devils went on to even up the match and force a fifth and deciding tie-breaker. The comeback became complete in the last set as Mathews defeated Lancaster, 15-12, with the crowd cheering on the MHS girls.

Unfortunately, a repeat of the same scenario wasn’t in the cards on Tuesday night as Mathews played host to the Westmoreland Eagles. Mathews struggled from the outset, losing the three sets, 25-13, 25-16 and 25-17.
