MHS girls open season with 20-10 win over Essex

The Mathews High School varsity softball team opened its 2025 regular season last Wednesday with a 20-10 win over the host Essex Trojans.
Leading batters for Mathews included Marley Brock, who went 3-for-4 at the plate, including a triple and six RBIs, and Addison Griffith, who was 3-for-3 in batting with three RBIs. Four other Lady Devils collected two hits apiece.
On Friday, the MHS girls traveled to Northumberland. Mathews fell to the host Indians, 13-3. Leading hitters for the Lady Devils included McKenzie Bartlett (two singles), Bentlea Lawrence and Emily Coons (each with a single and double).
“Sloppy defense set us back this game,” as well as leaving runners stranded in scoring position, head coach J.J.
