The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team fell by a single point last Thursday night at Charles City, 41-40.
The game was part of a tripleheader at the Panthers’ home court, with the girls’ game between the boys’ JV and varsity contests.
The Lady Devils and Lady Panthers both started off well, with Mathews taking a narrow 12-10 lead at the end of one quarter of play. The two squads continued to vie for the lead in the second quarter, with Mathews still ahead, 22-20, going into halftime.
The Panthers finally took the lead in the third quarter and held on to win, 41-40, at the final buzzer. Lead scorers of the game for Mathews were Lindsay Coons and Lyla Duff with eight points each.
The MHS girls are scheduled to travel to West Point today, Thursday, Jan. 23. On Monday, the Lady Devils will host Colonial Beach, with the JV game starting at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity tipoff at 7.
