The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team suffered a pair of defeats this week on the road, falling Monday to the Lancaster Red Devils, 33-25, and on Tuesday to the King and Queen Tigers, 48-41.
Lancaster
In Monday’s contest against the Red Devils, both teams were close in the opening quarters, with Mathews taking a 13-10 lead at halftime. Coming out of the locker room, the Blue Devils seemed to lose motivation. In the third quarter, both teams did well but the Blue Devils couldn’t keep up but only trailed by two points, 20-18. Lancaster took control in the final quarter to win by eight points. The highest scorer of the game for Mathews was Lindsay Coons with 12 points.
King and Queen
The following night, the MHS girls traveled with the MHS boys’ JV and varsity squads for a tripleheader at King and Queen High School. The MHS girls started off on a strong note, taking an 11-6 lead after a quarter of play. In the second quarter, the Blue Devils let the Royal Tigers catch up ...
