MHS girls fall to Chargers in regional tournament

The Mathews High School varsity volleyball season came to an end Monday night following a 3-0 defeat by Middlesex in the first round of the VHSL Region 1A tournament. The top-seeded Chargers were scheduled to host Westmoreland on Wednesday night in the regional semifinals.
The first set was rough with the Blue Devils giving their all but only scoring six points, losing 25-6. The second set was better for the Blue Devils, but the Chargers got an early lead and won, 25-12. The third set had the Mathews fans on the edge of their seats. The Chargers got an early eight-point lead but the Blue Devils caught up tying the game, 19-19. Middlesex ended up pulling out the win, 25-20, to take the victory.
In spite of the loss, the Blue Devils had a good season, with senior Lindsay Coons earning second-team All-District honors. Mathews also had a large number of team members named to the All-Academic team for maintaining a 3.5 GPA or higher.
