The Mathews High School volleyball team continues to improve its record, beating both Northumberland and Rappahannock in a pair of home games. Supported by a packed gym and spirited student section, Mathews welcomed the Lady Indians of Northumberland last Thursday.
The Lady Blue Devils rode the home court advantage to avenge their previous loss, beating the visitors in four sets: 28-26, 25-19, 23-25 and 25-12. The defeat was the first loss for the Lady Indians.
Leading the team in kills was Kai McCann having 13, followed by Jacqueline Stewart with nine, Hannah Rowe and Kayla Carter with five, and Brittany Mitchem, Keely Crittenden and Mariah Robinson with one each. McCann served four aces, while Anna Hudgins had two, and Rowe and Stewart each had one. Rowe and McCann led the team with digs having 18 and 15, respectively.
