The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team continued its winning ways this past week, defeating Northumberland and Essex in a pair of regional contests.
The Lady Devils traveled to Northumberland last Thursday for the second face-off this year. The Indians came out fired up and won the first set 27-25.
Between sets, team captains Teeny Robbins and Kacie Austin fired the Devils up,and got them back on track. "We didn’t pull it together and get into our rhythm until the end of the set, after it was too late," says Rachel Close.
Mathews reasserted its dominance by winning the next three sets 25-10, 25-14 and 25-16.
Maddie McCann led the team in kills with 23, followed closely by Mackenzie Moughon with 21 aided by Kacie Austin (four kills), Teeny Robbins (three) and Shelby Ware and Close (one each) Ware provided a team-leading 49 assists, with Close adding three, Robbins and Rowe one apiece.
