The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team defeated West Point last Thursday, blanking the visiting Pointers, 9-0. Leading the way in singles play with victories were Lyla Duff (8-1), Brooke Fulford (8-2), Liberti Carter (8-1), Lily Jarosz (8-0), Ella Ward (8-0) and Jayda Thomas (9-7).
The doubles teams of Duff/Carter, Fulford/Jarosz and Ward/Thomas posted wins to complete the shutout.On Friday, Mathews traveled to Denbigh, defeating the Patriots, 9-0, losing only three games in the process. Exhibition wins were also posted by Delaney Boatman and Charlotte Bailey.
The win streak ended Monday with the Lady Devils falling at home to Rappahannock, 7-2. Ward came away with a dramatic 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 tiebreaker win, then teamed up with Jayda Thomas for a 6-2, 6-2 doubles victory.On Monday afternoon, the MHS girls are scheduled to host Northampton, starting at 4.
