The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team completed a JV/varsity sweep Monday night of Essex, beating the visiting Trojans, 3-1. The win came on the heels of the JV girls’ exciting come-from-behind victory.
The first set in Monday’s varsity matchup was a thriller, finally ending with a 26-24 Devil win. The second set began with Mathews getting a six-point run. Essex kept up for the most part sending over free balls for Mathews to pick up and attack. The second set ended, 25-19, putting the Devils up by two.
The Blue Devils went into the third set thinking they were going to put Essex to sleep, but Essex figured out how to keep up. They put free balls deep and in the donut, winning 25-22. Although the Trojans won the last set, the Devils did not let that stop them. They decided to win and send them home. Mathews went on a 10-point run and lost the ball to a kill from the Trojans. Mathews won the last set, 25-13, to take the match.
