The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team started off the week posting a win last Wednesday, Dec. 6, over the visiting Northampton Lady Yellow Jackets. The rest of the recent schedule wasn’t as successful for the Lady Devils, with losses to Charles City, Colonial Beach and King William.
Northampton
Last Wednesday’s game began with a flurry of action as Mathews fought to earn an early advantage, taking an 18-7 lead into halftime. In the second half, Northampton fouled one girl after another and kept giving Mathews free shots. The game ended strong for the Mathews, winning by 20 points, 36-16. Top scorers of the game were Laura Rowe with 10 points and Grayson Griffith with 8.
Charles City
On Friday, Mathews played a triple header with the Panthers at Charles City, beginning with the JV boys, followed by the varsity girls and concluded with the varsity boys.
