In a busy week for the Mathews High School varsity softball teams, the Lady Devils faced West Point, Lafayette and Middlesex. The highlight of the week for Mathews was Monday’s game at Lafayette; in a thrilling, three-plus hour contest, Mathews beat the Rams, 23-18.
Unfortunately for Mathews, that win was bookended by a pair of lopsided losses to West Point last Thursday (11-0) and Middlesex (12-1).
In the Lafayette game, Angel Shultz drove in five runs on four hits to lead the Lady Devils. As a team, Mathews collected 22 hits, to 14 for the Rams in the high-scoring affair.
A single by Alivia Garrett put Mathews on the scoreboard in the top of the first. Mathews exploded in the second inning for 12 more runs on nine hits, including a single by Addy Lowe that scored two.
