The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team earned a pair of wins this past week, defeating the visiting Middlesex Chargers on Friday night, 25-19, and crushing the Carver Academy Wolverines on the road, 56-29.
The MHS girls, who now hold a 7-12 record, were scheduled to host the Gloucester Dukes in a varsity-only contest on Wednesday night. The Lady Devils end the regular season at home on Friday as part of a triple-header against King and Queen, sandwiched between the MHS JV and varsity boys’ games, starting at 5:30 p.m.
In Friday’s hard-fought contest against the visiting Chargers, Sarah Ashbaugh was the top scorer for Mathews with seven points. Sister Olivia Ashbaugh and Laura Rowe added five points each, followed by Serenity Forrest (four points) and Grayson Griffith (three).
Olivia Ashbaugh and Avery Thomas, meanwhile, were the top scorers against Carver. Both girls ended the night in double figures; Ashbaugh with 12 and Thomas with 11. Sarah Ashbaugh and Lindsay Coons...
