MHS girls beat Cavs, fall to Pointers

In the final week of regular season play, the Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team split a pair of games, beating the visiting King William Cavaliers last Thursday and falling on the road to the West Point Pointers.

In the final home game of the season, the MHS girls defeated the King William Cavaliers, 38-29. Before the tipoff, the team recognized its senior players. The Blue Devils came out strong immediately getting a bucket off the jump ball and getting a few steals after that.
The Blue Devils kept the pace up but that didn’t stop the Cavaliers, with a few lucky points and turnovers they caught back up and scored just one more basket than the Blue Devils, giving the Cavaliers a narrow 12-11 lead after the first quarter. But the Mathews girls were not going to give up, holding the Cavs scoreless in the second quarter to take a 22-12 lead at halftime.
