The Mathews High School Class of 1973 celebrated its 50th reunion on Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Mathews Yacht Club. Thirty-three classmates and their guests took part, traveling from Pennsylvania, Maryland, Florida, Texas and Virginia to attend. The class paid homage to public servants, including the military, first responders and educators.
A special tribute was made to fellow classmate, Danny Howlett, former Mathews County Sheriff and Volunteer Fire Department Chief and Captain. The evening’s mistress of ceremonies was Denise Cooke, Class Valedictorian.
The four-course dinner was served on tables decorated with high-style centerpieces made by classmate Robin Lewis. Games and fun times were led by classmates Sharon Lawrence, Shirley Cooke and Betty Rinehardt. Reflections were delivered by class officers Robin Lewis and Joan Hammond.
The DJ, Zoe Entertainment, provided music from the 1970s. Fourteen members of the Class of 1973 were remembered in a candlelight memorial service.
