The Mathews High School varsity boys’ indoor track and field team placed first, while the MHS girls came in fourth overall in the Lampert Timing Indoor Track Meet #3, which was held on Tuesday, Dec. 17, at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton.
The MHS boys scored 90.5 team points, well ahead of second-place Northampton with 69. The MHS girls ended the day with 53 points, behind Rappahannock (78), Northampton (62) and Trinity Episcopal (60) and ahead of Northeastern (45) and eight other competitors.
The boys’ victory was powered by Chance Higginbotham’s win in the 3200-meter run (10:23.96), Gavin Dustin victory in the high jump (5’8”) and second-place finish in the 1,000-meter run (2:54.89) and David James and Higginbotham’s 1-2 finish in the 1,600-meter run (4:55.01 and 4:58.28).
