Heading into Winter Break, the Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team posted its first victory of the season on Friday, defeating the visiting West Point Pointers, 69-59.
Mathews was led by Jordyn Cosby through the first quarter with the team’s first 9 points coming from the junior center. Mathews pulled out to a quick lead with key 3-pointers from Blake Hunley and Julian Woodlen.
As Mathews continued to play strong basketball, Cosby picked up two fouls and was forced to sit for the rest of the second quarter. West Point closed the Blue Devil lead to four by the end of the first half, 36-32.
Mathews came out the locker room after halftime with a new spark, jumping out to a nearly 20-point lead. Desmond Darby was a major part in this lead, hitting tough mid-range shots over West Point defenders.
