MHS boys lose to Essex, King William
The Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team dropped a pair of games during the week, falling by nearly 40 points to Essex and nearly 20 points to King William.
In the Jan. 18 game, the Devils’ second matchup this season against the Trojans, Mathews hoped to keep the score a little closer than the previous contest. The Trojans, however, came out from the opening tipoff pushing too hard and fast for the Devils.
After countless turnovers, the game got out of reach as Essex won, 71-32. Xavien Boone was the leading scorer for the Devils with nine points. Also contributing points were Deondre Foster with six, Dayshon Williamson five, Gio Aromin and Detray Washington with four points followed by Cody Kelly and Deon Blake with two points each.
