The Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team came up on the losing end of a pair of close games this past week, including an overtime thriller on Friday against the visiting Northumberland Indians.

Back-to-back three-pointers by sophomore Chase Ambrose helped Mathews come back from a fourth-quarter deficit to force an overtime period against the Indians. Mathews came up short in that extra period, 72-69.
In the home opener, Mathews leaped out to an early lead with the Devil defense holding the Indians to 12 points in the first quarter. Northumberland slowly came back in the second quarter, led by Tyreek Lundy with 11 points. Mathews had no answer for Lundy as Northumberland led Mathews 33-27 at halftime. Mathews came out of the locker room with intensity as the Devils clawed their way back with help from Jordyn Cosby’s 15 points.
