MHS boys have a rough week

The Mathews High School boys’ basketball teams had a rough week, with the JV and varsity squads dropping games to King William, Northumberland and West Point in recent action.

After a slow start in the JV contest, the visiting Cavaliers took charge to beat the Devils, 38-10. The Cavaliers held a 2-0 lead until scoring seven points in the final 30 seconds of the opening quarter to open up a 9-0 lead. King William expanded the lead to 13 points going into halftime. Mathews lost control of the game as they were outscored by 14 points in the third quarter, trailing 34-7. The fourth quarter was even, as the Cavaliers maintained their lead to win the game. Alden Dollar led Mathews with five points.
The varsity matchup didn’t go any better for Mathews, as the Devils fell 89-48. The Cavaliers controlled the game with a suffocating press, scoring off of steals and turnovers as Mathews could simply not push the ball down the court. Stellar shooting kept the Blue Devils off balance o...
