The Mathews High School boys’ and girls’ cross country teams both dominated their Conference 42 foes last Wednesday to take home the championships in a meet on the grounds of Eastern State in Williamsburg.
The boys won with 20 points by an overwhelming margin, beating West Point (57) by 37 points. Middlesex placed third with 64 points. The girls were also victorious, winning with 27 points over West Point (40) and Middlesex (61).
The girls kicked off the day of racing a great result, placing four girls in the top seven overall finishers to receive All-Conference honors. Kate van Emmerik led the girls’ team with a time of 21:35, placing second overall. Ellie Gale (22:25) and Kaitlyn Thompson (22:44) followed, placing fourth and fifth, respectively. Kelly Nelson placed seventh with a time of 23:11. Kristen Fauber (24:50, ninth) and Maria Spadaccini (26:27, 11th) also had strong performances.
