Eager to build on its first district win last week, the Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team returned to the court on Tuesday to face Tidewater District foe West Point.
The varsity boys had been working hard all week and coach Curtis Williamson felt his team was ready to push the ball up the court and play aggressive defense against the homestanding Pointers. Williamson’s eagerness, however, quickly turned to disappointment as his Blue Devils fell to West Point, 76-41.
Cody Kelly and Deon Blake led the Devils in scoring with nine points each. Deondre Foster added six, followed by Xavien Boone with five and Detray Washington and Dayshon Williamson with four points each. Rounding out the scoring were Gio Aromin and Taiwan Forrest with two points apiece.
