The Mathews Blue Devils lost, 77-64, to the Middlesex Chargers in Monday’s Region 1A quarterfinals.
Both teams began the game with amazing defense, allowing no easy baskets. Middlesex began to move the ball around the court, resulting in a 12-7 lead for the Chargers, but Mathews quickly rallied after a timeout, cutting the lead to three at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was fast-paced with Tae Legette continuing to help Mathews swing the ball around the court. Senior Thomas Hubbard made two key three-pointers to give Mathews the lead. Middlesex fought back, obtaining a 39-31 point lead over the Devils.
Coming out of the half, Mathews played very aggressive basketball, speeding up the game and letting the ball flow. Middlesex managed to control transition throughout the game with many fast break points. Mathews went into the fourth quarter with an eight-point deficit.
