MHS boys drop two district games

The Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team dropped a pair of Tidewater District matchups this week, falling to Middlesex Friday and King William on Tuesday.

The Devils lost to the visiting Chargers, 60-55. C.J. Kelly led the way with 24 points. Deondre Foster added 12. Chase Kemp added six. Carter Vrooman scored five. Gio Aromin, Andre Carter and Ross McLaughlin scored two apiece.

On Tuesday, Mathews fell to King William, 60-54. C.J. Kelly scored 25 points, leading the Devils in the losing effort, and also reaching the 1,000-point milestone in his career at Mathews High School.

He was helped by teammate Michael Cunningham, who scored 11 points. Chase Kemp added 10. Deondre Foster (eight points), Andre Carter (six), Carter Vrooman (three) and Deon Blake and Derek Smoot (two each) rounded out the scoring.
