MHS boys drop two

The Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team saw its four-game win streak come to an end on Friday, with a loss on the road to the Middlesex Chargers. On Tuesday, the Devils dropped an 80-46 contest to Carver Academy. The JV Devils, meanwhile, also lost both games.

Middlesex dominated the visiting Blue Devils in Friday’s matchup, 82-48. In the opening minutes it was an 8-8 tie, but Middlesex quickly took control. The hosting Chargers outscored Mathews by double digits to close out the first quarter. The second quarter was controlled by Middlesex as senior Tae Legette picked up his fourth foul of the night.
Mathews struggled to break the press as the Chargers stopped all movement up the court. The first half ended with Mathews trailing, 51-23. Legette fouled out in the beginning minutes of the third quarter, which created a change in the Blue Devils’ game plan.
