MHS boys drop three

The Mathews High School boys’ JV and varsity basketball teams suffered losses during the past week to Northampton, Charles City and Colonial Beach. The teams will look to get back on the winning column on Friday when they host West Point, starting with the JV contest at 5:30 p.m.

The JV Blue Devils suffered a 70-17 loss last Wednesday at Northampton. Strong defense prevented Mathews from advancing the ball and allowed for easy scoring opportunities. Despite the lopsided result, the JV Blue Devils did not stop fighting and played their hardest until the final whistle.
The varsity matchup wasn’t much better, as Mathews fell to the Yellow Jackets, 101-47. The Blue Devils started strong, beating the Northampton press and keeping the game within reach. Both teams played strong defense, but the hosting Yellow Jackets had superior shooting, making key three-pointers to extend their lead going into halftime.
