The Mathews High School varsity baseball team is providing the heat in a stunningly cold spring, as the Blue Devils build a four-game winning streak, with the latest victories coming against Lancaster, Northumberland and Langley.
On March 20, the Blue Devils traveled to Lancaster to take on the Red Devils. Dominant pitching from sophomores Will Harrington and Logan Byrns, as well as senior Ryan Ewell, helped Mathews to a 5-1 victory.
The following day served another road trip for the Mathews ball club when the destination was Northumberland High School. The weather was against both clubs, but Mathews refused to surrender to it, as they nearly induced the slaughter-rule in a 14-4 win.
William Smith started the game, allowing no earned runs, and was eventually backed up by relievers Josh Wilson and Colin Cook to anchor their team to the win.
