The Mathews High School varsity baseball team, which continues to lose players and call up replacements from the jayvee squad, fell to King William on Tuesday, 6-2.
Tuesday’s game at King William was a rematch of an April 14 contest that the Devils had won. This time around, things were a little different.
Mathews didn’t come off the bus ready to play. King William jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second inning and never looked back. They scored their runs on walks, a hit batter and two hits. "It wasn’t pretty today," MHS head coach Nick Naglieri said.
Ryan Ewell got the start and struggled with his control, giving up all six runs on five walks and two hits, striking out two in one inning of work.
Nick Stump came in and pitched great, but while he held the Cavaliers scoreless, he never got the offensive support he needed. Stump pitched five innings, holding King William to two hits and one walk, striking out seven.
