The Mathews High School varsity baseball team’s record now stands at 4-4 after suffering a pair of non-conference losses this past week. The Devils fell to Northumberland on Friday, 10-5, and were shut out by the King William Cavaliers on Tuesday, 3-0.
In Friday’s game, giving up eight walks and two-hit batters was the Devils’ downfall. Mathews batters did pick up eight hits in the game, while holding the Indians to three.
On Tuesday, Daniel Moughon pitched a great game, striking out nine and giving up only three hits. Unfortunately, King William got its hits with runners in scoring position. Mathews had bases loaded two times and runners on second and third twice, but couldn’t get the hits when they needed them. “Too many missed opportunities,” head coach Al DeWitt said.
On Friday, the Blue Devils host Essex, starting at 5 p.m. MHS continues its homestand on Monday against Washington and Lee, also at 5.
