Although the 2023-2024 school year has not yet officially begun, the Mathews High School marching band has been hard at work for months to get ready for the performance season, according to band director Mark Givens.
Band camp started on July 24, and the students spent two weeks coming in for eight hours a day to get ready for the coming season. The band consists of 36 students from eighth through 12th grades. Half of this group, Givens said, consists of rookie marchers. “We lost a lot of talent last year, but we already have some young players stepping up,” he said. “Our field show this year is titled ‘Music of the Night.’”
