MHS band gears up for competitive season

The Mathews High School Marching Blue Devils held an open dress rehearsal last Thursday in front of a small crowd at the school’s Ken Brown Field.
This was the first performance of the band’s full 2024 Field Show, “Rhapsody!” featuring music from Bohemian Rhapsody and Rhapsody in Blue. The rehearsal included a clinic from former Gloucester High School band director Tom Emory.
The band is gearing up for its competitive season which starts this Saturday, where they will perform at the Warhill Classic in Williamsburg in Class A competition. The band is scheduled to perform at 3:45 p.m.
The Marching Blue Devils will also be competing at the Warrior Classic in Hampton on Oct. 12, the Bands Along the Bay Competition at Gloucester High School on Oct. 19, and at the VBODA State Assessment in Yorktown on Oct. 26.
You can also catch the band’s field show locally at Homecoming on Oct. 11 and at Senior Night on Nov. 1, where the future Marching Blue Devils will be joining the band.
