Following a 7-1 regular season in which the team won the Tidewater District championship, the Mathews High School Scholastic Bowl team coasted to the Tidewater District Tournament Championship in front of a home audience on Saturday.
The Scholastic Bowl team competes against district opponents, earning 10 points for correct answers to trivia questions while risking a potential five-point penalty for answering an interrupted question incorrectly.
Matches consist of two toss-up rounds and a team round in which the team discusses the answer the captain will give to the judge. The top-seeded Devils opened the tournament against fourth-seeded Middlesex, a squad that played Mathews tough in two Devil victories this season. The tournament opener appeared to be yet another classic after the first round, but a solid team round and a lopsided final toss-up round resulted in a 235-130 rout.
