The Mathews Family YMCA, in partnership with the Mathews Yacht Club and Mathews County Public Schools, provided every second-grade student at Mathews Elementary School instruction on Safety Around the Water.
The two-week program, free for all children, included two on-land instruction sessions and six in-water sessions.
“With the many miles of waterfront in the county, this instruction is a much-needed life skill,” said Mathews Family YMCA executive director Buzz Lambert. “It is a joy to see the children master some basic water skills. I want to thank these volunteers who jumped in the cooler waters to ensure our second graders could improve their aquatic skills over the past two weeks.”
