Melvin Allen Callis, 79, a lifelong resident of Cobbs Creek, Virginia, passed away on Monday, November 6, 2023. He was born on July 19, 1944 to Friedenwald and Myrtle Callis. Melvin served in the Air National Guard of Virginia from 1965 to 1971. He graduated from Mathews High School in 1962. He retired from Newport News Shipbuilding after serving in the rigging department for 34 years. He was a member of Mathews Chapel United Methodist Church and was faithful to his church in multiple roles to include lay minister and Sunday school teacher. Melvin was also a member of the Kairos Prison Ministry. He loved his family, gardening, and studying the Bible. He was an avid fisherman of the Piankatank River and will be remembered for his loving care of his wife during her lengthy illness.
He was predeceased by his wife, Brenda; his parents; a brother, Wayne Callis, and a sister, Rita Callis.
He is survived by his children, Matthew Callis, Adam Callis (Carrie), and Rebekah Elmore (Dan); his siblings, Richard Callis, Linda Simmons, Leonard Callis, and Janie Davis; nine grandchildren, and his beloved dog, Abby.
The family will receive friends on Friday, November 10, 2023 from 10-11 a.m. at Mathews Chapel United Methodist Church, Cobbs Creek, with a funeral service at 11 o’clock. Interment will follow in Haynes Cemetery. The family would like to express their gratitude to Riverside Walter Reed Hospice and the staff at Gloucester House for the care they provided in his final months and days. Faulkner Funeral Homes, Foster-Faulkner Chapel, Mathews, Virginia, is assisting the family.
