The Tompkins Cottage and the Thomas James Store museums will open for the season on Saturday, April 1, and the day will also include the launch of the latest book offering from the Mathews County Historical Society.
“Historic Homes and Properties of Mathews County, Virginia Pre-Civil War Fifth in a Series of Five,” will be officially launched at 11 a.m. that day at the Tompkins Cottage Museum, 43 Brickbat Road, across from Mathews County’s Historic Court Green.
The event will provide an opportunity for the Mathews County Historical Society to thank the homeowners who allowed their homes to be featured in the book. A reception will be held on the Tompkins Cottage Museum grounds. The public is invited.
“Volume 5” documents 10 of Mathews County’s antebellum homes that are noteworthy architecturally and historically: Bar Neck, George P. Owens House, Goshen, Green Plains, Hesse, Holly Point (Spirit Hall), John Forrest House, John Haynes Jarvis House, Keeble House and Providence (Hopemont). ...
