Matthew Lyn Weatherwax, age 49, of Gloucester, died suddenly on Thursday, December 7, 2023. Matthew was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, on September 28, 1974 to David Weatherwax and the late Mary Jo Hargrafen. He joined the U.S. Marines in February of 1995 and married the love of his life, Marsha Heims Weatherwax, in Manchester, Iowa, on May 24, 1997. He then separated from the military in January 2003. During his time in the military, Matthew graduated from Park University with a Bachelor of Science in Management/Computer Science in 2001 and graduated from Troy University with a Master’s in Management in 2003. Matthew was employed by the U.S. Department of Defense as a Branch Chief of the Air Force Enterprise Capabilities Team. He was also a member of the Abingdon Ruritan Club. In addition to his mother, Matthew was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Jerald Heims. Matthew is survived by his wife, Marsha Heims Weatherwax, and his children, Martin and Miriam. He is also survived by his father, David Weatherwax (Janie); sister, Jen Daniels (Curt); brother, Ben Weatherwax (Kayla); mother-in-law, Darlene Heims; brothers-in-law, Mark Heims (Ginger), Ron Heims (Shelly); sister-in-law, Nancy Atkinson (Paul); nieces and nephews, Colt Daniels, Piper Daniels, Paige Daniels, Remy Weatherwax, Rowan Weatherwax, Brendan Heims, Kyleigh Heims, Mike Atkinson, Troy Atkinson, Kaitlyn Heims, Kelsey Heims, Lexi Heims, and Grace Heims. The family received friends at Hogg Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, from 6-7:30 p.m. The memorial service, conducted by Pastor Arthur Wolz, was held in the chapel of Hogg Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, at 11 a.m., followed by military funeral honors.
