The Mathews High School wrestling team had little trouble with opponents from Middlesex and King and Queen in a meet held Feb. 1 that was supposed to be a district tournament.
King William was also scheduled to compete, but had several wrestlers contract a skin infection and, to avoid spreading it, dropped out of the contest. Because King William didn’t compete, other teams agreed to hold the Tidewater District medals and trophy for next year.
Mathews beat Middlesex, 57-21, and shut out King and Queen, 82-0. Winning matches were Matt Rouland, Eric Johnson, Billy Bower, Jared Inge and Austin Fravel. Inge had the most exciting match of the day, pinning Victor Bibbens of King and Queen in 4:05.
