The Mathews High School wrestling team opened its 2012-2013 season last week with a 3-2 performance in Saturday’s York Duals. The Devil wrestlers defeated Bruton, Warhill and Lafayette, losing to Jamestown and Tabb.
"We are in a rebuilding year, losing nine out of 14 starters from last year," said MHS head coach Tom Holaday. "Starting on varsity, we have seven wrestlers that are first year and have never wrestled before."
First-year wrestlers on the squad are Bryan Hostetter (freshman, 106 lbs.), Jon Oliver (sophomore, 120 lbs.), Tyler Zable (sophomore, 145 lbs.), Ronald Rife (freshman, 152 lbs.), Jeremiah Shores (freshman, 160 lbs.), Joey Scales (senior, 195 lbs.) and Bill Riley (sophomore, heavyweight).
Also new to the varsity lineup is freshman Parker Thompson, who wrestled jayvee last year, but was injured early in the season. The starter at 138 lbs., Thompson went 3-2 for the day. Mathews doesn’t have a wrestler at 113 lbs.
