The Mathews High School track team competed at the Charles City Last Chance Invitational Saturday. The girls’ team placed third and the boys placed second.
On the girls’ side, Kaylyn Kelly started the day off well with her second-place finish in the discus (91’5"). Katelyn Dehnert took fourth place in the shot put (30’2"). Jessica Nelson tied for second in the high jump with a personal best of 5’10", qualifying her for the state competition. Katie Phillips placed fifth in the long jump (13’2.5").
Macon Swartzwelder took a fifth-place finish in the 100-meter dash in 14.43 and seventh in the 200-meter dash in 29.84. Mariah Davis also placed in the 200-meter dash, taking sixth in the 400 with a time of 29.68. Davis also finished fourth in the 400 (1:08.9). Then Autumn Tilghman took sixth place in the 800 in 3:15.03.
For the distance squad, Sally Taylor placed second in the 1600 with a time of 6:00.13. Stephanie Jeffers later ...
